The Way
Do you ever feel like your sin has entangled you one too many times
and is too much for you to bear? Even after you have truly taken it to
God, are you overwhelmed by yourself and your sin?
Your mind knows the Scripture; you recite it over and over. Yet, at
certain moments, it's difficult for you to comprehend the all-merciful
God. Don't allow your lack of comprehension to keep you from believing
that your forgiveness has been provided in the Son of God-your
Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.
Your confession and repentance allows Jesus to cleanse you-no
matter how you feel or how little you can comprehend His majestic
grace. When troubled by sin or overwhelmed by how often you fall
short (Romans 3:23), return to the day you met Him. Did you
understand everything about all of Christ's provisions? No. You knew
that Jesus offered His life as your atonement-He accepted on Himself
the punishment for the sins of all mankind-past, present, and future.
And toward the end of His earthly life He cried out, "It is finished."
Return to the work that has been done: The victory has been won.
Remember that your acceptance of Him and invitation for Christ to live
within your heart has crucified you with Christ. It is no longer you who
live, but Christ who lives in you. (Galatians 2:20) Yes, you still live in a
body of flesh and bones, and yes, you still live in a fallen world amidst
temptation and evil of every kind. But, glory to the Lamb of God, you
have been set free. No longer are you a slave to sin; no longer are you
a slave to the Law; you are a slave to righteousness-made possible
through faith in Jesus Christ.
And remember where your hope comes from: "My soul waits in silence
for God only; from Him is my salvation. He only is my rock and my
salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken" (Psalm 62:1-2).
David waited on the Lord and warns us to wait upon Him, trusting Him
with our lives, instead of relying upon our own strength.
When you are overwhelmed by the temptations you face,
follow David's advice in Psalm 62:8, "Trust in Him at all times, O
people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us"
(emphasis added). At the foot of the cross, we learn that Jesus Christ
our Lord is greater than all our sins. He is still, and always will be, the
only way. (John 14:6)
